St. Clair College Adopts Legacy EV Curriculum to Train Future Technicians

As the transportation industry moves toward electric vehicles (EVs), St. Clair College of Applied Arts and Technology has responded by creating a specialized program to train the next generation of EV technicians.

With input from industry partners and the integration of Legacy EV’s curriculum and training tools, the college has developed a comprehensive approach to electric-drive vehicle education.

The Challenge:

St. Clair College recognized the growing demand for technicians skilled in EV technology. Traditional automotive programs, focused primarily on internal combustion engines, were no longer enough. The challenge was to shift the focus from mechanical systems to electric and electronic systems, which are critical in EV technology. St. Clair needed a curriculum that provided hands-on training while covering the essential technical knowledge of electric-drive vehicles.

The Solution:

St. Clair College partnered with Legacy EV to implement their EV Foundations curriculum, which introduces students to key EV components such as batteries, motor controllers, and power electronics. This curriculum was designed to meet the evolving demands of the industry while being adaptable to St. Clair’s existing automotive training framework.

EV Tech education program

A core element of the program is the use of Legacy EV’s 100V Training Bench. This interactive tool allows students to gain practical, hands-on experience with live EV systems. They can safely work with electric motors, battery systems, and controllers, learning how to diagnose and troubleshoot EV technology in a controlled setting.

Key Features:

Targeted Curriculum: The EV Foundations curriculum equips students with the foundational knowledge needed to work with electric vehicles, covering system design, service, and repair. It emphasizes electric-drive vehicles and modern network topologies, ensuring that the education is aligned with industry trends.

Hands-On Training: The 100V Training Bench provides essential hands-on experience, allowing students to apply what they learn in the classroom to real-world EV systems. This practical training is crucial for developing the skills needed to work as an EV technician.

Industry-Driven Content: Developed with input from EV industry professionals, the program ensures that students are prepared for the latest challenges in the field. This alignment with industry needs helps bridge the gap between education and employment.

Work-Based Learning: St. Clair integrates co-ops and internships into the program, giving students real-world experience and opportunities to connect with potential employers in the EV space.

Outcomes:

Since adopting Legacy EV’s curriculum and training tools, St. Clair College has seen a rise in student enrollment in their electric-drive vehicle program. Graduates leave with a strong understanding of EV systems and the practical skills to excel in the workforce, positioning them as valuable candidates in an industry that’s rapidly shifting toward electrification.

Conclusion:

St. Clair College’s electric vehicle program, powered by Legacy EV’s curriculum and training tools, provides a modern, industry-aligned education for future EV technicians. By focusing on hands-on learning and real-world application, the program ensures that students are ready to meet the demands of the electric vehicle industry.
