Igniting Young Minds: A Teenagers Electric Porsche Dream

When most 16-year-olds are scrolling through social media or hanging out with friends, Frances Farnam is in the garage, knee-deep in wires and tools, working to convert a classic 1976 Porsche 914 into an electric vehicle. But this isn’t just about creating a cool first car—it’s about sparking inspiration. Through her YouTube channel and Instagram, Frances, better known as Tinkergineering, is on a mission to show young people that they too can take charge of their future, one bolt at a time.

A Dream Born in a Backyard

Frances’s story began at just 11 years old, picking grapefruit in her backyard to save up for her first car. But unlike most pre-teens dreaming of a sleek ride, Frances wanted more than just a vehicle. She envisioned a project that would teach her invaluable skills, break stereotypes, and ultimately inspire others to pursue their passions fearlessly.

That dream led her to a Porsche 914—an iconic car that matched her vision of classic cool while also being the perfect candidate for an electric makeover. Her quest to electrify the 914 quickly grew into something much larger than she ever anticipated, turning her into an ambassador for the electric vehicle (EV) movement and a role model for young makers everywhere.

Legacy EV: Building the Future, One Student at a Time

To bring her vision to life, Frances sought knowledge and mentorship. That search led her to Legacy EV’s EV Fundamentals Certification Bootcamp, where she gained hands-on experience with EV wiring, programming, and safety systems. “It was such a cool experience to be surrounded by so many people who wanted to become certified in electric vehicles,” Frances shared. The training gave her not just technical skills but also access to a supportive network of EV professionals and enthusiasts.

Legacy EV’s educational programs are designed to empower the next generation of engineers, builders, and innovators. By engaging today’s youth in EV technology, trade skills, and STEM education, Legacy EV is playing a pivotal role in shaping a more sustainable future. Frances is living proof of this vision in action.

The Power of Mentorship and Community

Frances’s journey hasn’t been a solo adventure. From marketing guidance by Matt at 914 Rubber to welding skills taught by Dick Sappington, her success is built on the shoulders of those who have generously shared their expertise. This network of mentors has not only accelerated her learning curve but also reinforced the value of community in pursuing ambitious dreams.

But it’s not just about the technical know-how. Frances candidly admits that learning to write emails and make phone calls was one of the most challenging parts of her journey. “The only person I’d ever really called before was my grandma,” she laughs. Yet, these soft skills are just as crucial as turning a wrench, especially for a young engineer navigating a traditionally adult-dominated space.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Maker

Frances’s mission goes beyond building an electric car. She aims to shatter the self-doubt that holds so many young people back from pursuing their passions. By sharing her journey—complete with setbacks and successes—she’s proving that learning how to learn is more powerful than any single skill set.

“Now, I’m starting to inspire myself, and I hope to inspire other kids—and even parents—along the way,” she says. Her project has also brought her closer to her father, Daniel Farnam, who has been her biggest supporter. “It’s not just a cool, shiny car,” Daniel reflects. “It’s the time we’re spending together and inspiring other families to get out there and do more.”

Fueling the Dream: How You Can Help

Despite her impressive achievements, Frances’s electric Porsche 914 is still a work in progress. To complete her build, she’s actively seeking sponsorships and partnerships. “I never imagined this project would turn into something so big,” she admits. But to see it through, she needs the help of those who believe in her vision.

By sponsoring Tinkergineering, brands can not only gain visibility among an engaged audience of builders and EV enthusiasts but also play a part in empowering the next generation of makers.
