Empowering Students: Legacy EV Launches Electric Vehicle Clubs in AZ Schools

Maricopa County Superintendent Steve Watson and Legacy EV, have joined forces to create the EV Innovators Club, offering students in grades 5-12 a deep dive into the world of electric vehicles (EVs).

Over the four-month program, students will learn from industry professionals, gaining insights into EV manufacturing and career opportunities. Already, Legacy EV has trained 27 teachers across 20 schools in 15 districts to be club sponsors and launch EV Innovators Clubs in their schools. Legacy EV will continue to work directly with school staff sponsor to help students get hands-on EV experience as they work together to design and build their own electric go karts. The students will then showcase their electric go karts in the Arizona Public Service Electric Light Parade on December 7.

"I couldn’t be more excited to work with Legacy EV to launch the EV Innovators Club for our students across the county and see them grow in reach and impact for years to come."
Steve Watson, Superintendent, Maricopa Country School District.

The club registration fee of includes the electric go-kart, decorations for the parade, tools, and educational materials. Participants also receive access to bi-monthly webinars and weekly activity guides to enhance their learning. Additionally, a sponsor kick-off event helps set the stage for their journey into the EV industry. Schools can even add extra karts for a more robust experience.

"The EV Innovators Club will empower students as they collaborate, build, market, and decorate their EV go karts, gaining practical experience and knowledge related to the electric vehicle industry. I can’t wait to see hundreds of Arizona students learn about the future of EVs as we jumpstart these clubs."
Mavrick Knoles, President, Legacy EV.

In addition to assembling their own EV go kart, students will learn from professionals in the EV industry about career opportunities in the field such as advanced manufacturing, system design, electrical systems integration and much more, opening the door to a potential career path in the future.

“I know the students will have a fun, memorable, and impactful experience building these EV go karts with their friends and celebrating at the light parade,” Maricopa County Superintendent Steve Watson added.

"I think that the most valuable part of the training was the fact that it was all put on by former teachers. It was very engaging, hands on, and informative. The lesson plans for the club made me feel much more at ease as well."
Bryan Balog, Teacher, Justine Spitalny.

This initiative is more than just technical education—it’s a hands-on pathway for young students to become future innovators in the fast-growing EV field.
